About Healthy Minds

Healthy Minds provides mental health services to vulnerable people who cannot access Medicare subsidised psychological interventions. To be eligible patients must have a Health Care Card (or be suffering severe financial distress).

The service enables GPs, Psychiatrists and Paediatricians to refer people with mental health concerns to a Healthy Minds mental health practitioner. Mental health practitioners include psychologists, mental health social workers, mental health nurses, occupational therapists and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health workers.

Healthy Minds practitioners have agreed not to charge a gap fee; therefore, there is no cost for a patient to receive Healthy Minds services.

Vulnerable people, for various reasons, can often find it difficult to visit a GP, and therefore may not receive a referral for mental health services. To assist such people to gain access to mental health services, partnerships have been developed with local Community Service Organisations such as employment, homelessness, domestic violence and family support services.

These organisations will identify people in need of psychological support, and assist them to access their GP either by making appointments, providing reminders or arranging transport.

Healthy Minds practitioners are co‐located within these community service organisations, making it easier for vulnerable people to access mental health services.

Healthy Minds is funded by the Australian Government Department of Health, using both Access to Allied Psychological Services (ATAPS) and Better Access funding. The service is managed locally by the North Coast Primary Health Network
